Are you starting to feel some of those strands to the Festive vibe? Stirrings of childhood memories filled with laughter and child-like expectations, with a myriad of coloured glowing lights on trees. The smell of pine (or maybe pine air fresheners tied to plastic trees)? What about the malls all decked out to be jolly, tra-la-la etc? What you thought was tugging at your heartstrings turned out to be tugging at the contents of your wallet or purse, right? Yeah it’s Christmas time, even for weathered humbuggers like me. So it shouldn’t come as any surprise to admit I’ve been sitting on this song for near on three weeks just waiting for the right time to give you all a heads up. Look around. Now is the time.
It wasn’t so long ago I was giving another one of those heads up here on ‘Art Rock & Jazz Folk Fusion’ line up, Potter’s Daughter and another single they had released featuring guest artist, Annie Haslam. If you missed that the first time you can check it out here:
Between that and this release, Dyanne Potter Voegtlin had happily announced to signing up with the independent progressive music label, Melodic Revolution Records (MRR), debuting with on December 1st (although it was available as a pre-sale at this year’s ProgStock Festival) a holiday-themed single, “This Winter’s Child,” and available both digitally and as a CD single (links below)

I actually messaged Dyanne yesterday to pass on how much I was enjoying listening to ‘This Winter’s Child.’ “This new one certainly touches a chord. Very much a choral element to your vocals with, to my ears, a touch of Vince Guaraldi on piano Loving it.”
“Astute as always ” Dyanne replied. “I am a HUGE fan of choral music!! As a matter of fact, three of the songs from our album, “The Blind Side,” are arrangements of choral pieces written by the fabulous choral composer, Morton Lauridsen. “
Dyanne also added, “So happy you like our new song! We are going into the studio in early January to record one more single (a fiery instrumental this time!!) before we begin working on our second album! I am very excited about it!!!”
This Winter’s Child really is a seasonal song in all meanings and expressions of the word, both in spirit and weather forecasting. If you’re looking for a piece of music written just for you prog-minded festive folk then this is it. Okay, I may have exaggerated a little to appeal to us progheads just then. This song is for everyone. So make it a special gift to yourself, or for a loved one or even that Secret Santa present you were racking your brains on what to get. They’ll get it. Of course they will. You just bought it for them. But they will get how special and lovely and personal and deeply felt it will be when they hear this for the first and second and third time. It’s not just a song to be shared. It’s the perfect way of connecting this time of year.
For those in the northern hemisphere it will soften and add a warm glow to your Winter sojourn around the sun. For those in the southern hemisphere. You get to bask in the Summer’s sun and immerse yourself in the sound of cold and whiteness within the music of Potter’s Daughter. Or as I like to think making good use of Lewis Carroll’s passage from his novel, ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass,’ “I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.” It’s all there in this song.
Dyanne has a wonderful voice, that Jon Anderson of Yes fame has praised along with their music, capturing the season perfectly with her tones and the words, you can almost see the steamy breath vapour as the song slumberly moves on. Just as impressive is Dyanne on piano which features heavily on this throughout. It’s a great balance rounded off with bass, guitar, and percussion from the others. Northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere. It’s Christmas!
